We borrowed several of the Scooby Doo Case File games from our local library. I was trying to decide whether to purchase them. My son is a HUGE Scooby fan, so I figured if the games are easy enough for a 3 year old and can hold his attention then I'd buy them. First, the graphics and voices are true to the tv show, so this game really holds my son's attention. I like that there are 3 levels of difficulty. We stuck to the "spooky" (easy) level. The main menu screen puts the gang in the middle of a movie studio. They are there to see the movie studio president who is planning to film a movie about their adventures. But when they arrive, they find that all the employees are leaving because the ghost of the headless stuntman is on the loose. Scooby and the gang need to find the clues and figure out who is behind the mystery. Basically, from the main screen, there are several different "movie sets" where the gang can search for clues. Each area has suspects to interview, and items to pick up. This format is similar to the other Scooby Doo case file mysteries we have rented. Once you find all the clues, you can guess at which of the suspects you think is the thief and then learn the secret identity of the ghost. One nice thing that this game has that the other games didn't have is printable activities. As you walk around the studio, you will find movie reels. When you pick up a movie reel, you can print out a scooby activity to do offline (usually some kind of coloring page, or puzzle to solve). Another difference with this game (as compared to the other Scooby games we've tried) is that some of the screens are locked until certain clues are found. Pretty much right from the start, you will want to increase your stash of scooby snacks, because there are some buildings that Scooby and Shaggy won't even enter if you don't give them a scooby snack first. The games themselves are also more challenging in this case file game (even on the easiest level). Now, my son is probably on the young side for many of these games, and searching for clues and interviewing suspects was a little over his head. But most of the case file games contain mini games within the game are easy enough to navigate around and play independently through some of it. Most of these mini-games are matching activities or "put these things in the right order" kind of games that hold a preschool aged child's attention and are easy enough to navigate through. There is just more to do with the software (outside of looking for clues to solve the mystery). My son liks revisiting the games and getting better at them each time he plays. In "Jinx at the Sphinx", after playing a couple of times, he could remember exactly how to get to each game and could play by himself with no difficulty. "Frights, Camera, Mystery" also has several mini-games, but they require much more dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and familiarity with the keyboard (instead of just point and click kind of action). This proved to be a little too difficult for my son, and his interest in this game has fizzled a little. I still think this is a great kids game, but is more geared for older kids. If you have a younger child (3-4) I'd recommend starting with "Jinx at the Sphinx" or "Showdown in Ghost Town" and working your way up to this one.
